Plain packaging for Ireland and Britain, WHO applauds

The UK House of Commons and the parliament of Ireland have both recently passed plain packaging legislation in the fight against tobacco use. Singapore and Norway are starting consultations, and the topic is also under consideration in South Africa, Panama, France, New Zealand and Turkey. Dr Margaret Chan, CEO of the WHO has applauded Australia’s efforts to reduce smoking.

Privatisation is back in the news, in the lead up to the NSW state election on March 28. Emeritus Professor Bob Walker and Dr Betty Con Walker, authors of the book, Privatisation: sell off or sell out? The Australian experience have written a briefing paper showing that profts from electricity assets have been underreported to make selling them palatable to NSW taxpayers. Privatisation goes into greater detail about the downside to governments divesting public assets into private hands.
